Threskeia‘s Summer Solstice Ceremony
Rock Sanctuary, Momini Kamani in the Thracian region of Starosel, Bulgaria
Northern Hemisphere

Notes: Groups and individuals will gather in the early day (no specific meeting time) to make their way up the mountain on their own before the celebrations begin in the late afternoon. For information on getting to the location and for exact dates and times contact Threskeia’s Facebook Page.

Join the Bulgarian community Threskeia, in their celebration of the summer solstice on the sacred grounds of an ancient Thracian site at Starosel. It was at the site of these megalithic rock formations that the ancient Thracians once worshiped.

Experience a two-day ancient Thracian celebration, bringing together age-old customs, clothing, music, chant and rites of an early Indo-European spirituality. The ceremony will be in Bulgarian.

The summer solstice celebrations honor the Great Goddess and her son and their ancient Bulgarian associations with the Sun and Fire.  Preparations begin between 19:00 and 20:00 where men can help with gathering wood, and women with making crown wreathes for participants to wear. The solstice ceremony begins at 20:30 surrounded by a bonfire with traditional ancient Thracian customs. Festivities continue until the night. In the early morning people will gather herbs and sacred plants associated with the summer solstice as well as wreath-making.

What to Bring: Camping gear and weather appropriate clothing

  • That seems very nice, hope they have a great Solstice this year 🙂

It’s interesting how little I knew of Thracian history, nothing really, and still now I know very little. But it’s amazing that during the iron age time of the Celts that in those regions they were producing very intriguing and spiritually themed cauldrons like this one ‘Gundestrup’!

Also, although probably less connected time wise, I adore traditional Bulgarian vocal music. Very intense yet very beautiful.

    Thanks Olga.

  • This site in Starosel seems to have some really magical atmosphere. I just recently talked to somebody on Youtube from Bulgaria, who told me that all Thracian sites are sun-aligned, which is really interesting. It is great to see there are groups like this one to revive this ancient heritage in such beautiful ways! The photos of their ceremonies look stunning too. Thanks Olga for the article.
